In class:
Today we will discuss the risks and benefits of presenting ourselves online. We will consider what it means to adopt different identities online. By viewing a short video we will observe a student who presents them self online in a variety of ways. Is it ethical to exaggerate, deceive, or adopt a different personality? Are there any benefits to adopting different online identities?
We will also look at and review case studies in small groups to analyze a variety of scenarios involving online identities. In class we will create a spectrum to see if the particular behavior is Harmless/Harmful.
Group questions to consider while reading the case studies:
• What motivates this person to present himself or herself differently online?
• What are the consequences of the person’s actions? How do you think it might end up affecting the person? How might it affect other people?
• Do you think it is okay to present a different identity in this situation? Why or why not?
