Guides to Great Artists
Objectives: You will research a famous artist and create a pamphlet about the artist using a template created with Word. Each artist study will include images by the artist and text that highlights important aspects of the artist and their work. Students will also create a version of the artist's work using the computer or traditional media.
Essential Questions:
What makes the artist you chose famous?
How do you identify the artist's style?
How has the artist's work change the course of art history? (impact of the artist)

Task 2
We will go over citation usage, and electronic sources when doing research online. We will go over APA style
You will have time to research, investigate and collect information on your artist. First we will do some practice. Together we will go over how to cite a variety of electronic sources.
Task 3
After the demonstration of the example pamphlet you will create one with your choice of artist. Here are some tips on how to organize your pamphlet:
- The artist and times (world events/personal timeline)
- Personal history (family/friends)
- Artistic history: styles, famous images, styles, movements
- Theme/subject matter (still life, portraits, women, self portraits, etc...)
- Media (painting, etching, sculpture, ceramics, etc...)
Task 4
For this task you will create a document to hold all of your images and sites as you investigate your websites. When you are online looking for information about your artist it will be very important to copy and paste images and URL's into the document so there is no confusion about citing your sources. You can also use this document to save text. Remember that you should NOT copy the text you read verbatim, it should be read and then put into your own words so you can later decide what you want to use in your pamphlet.
Use the "Artist Guide Criteria Sheet" to determine what facts you will need for your pamphlet.
Example questions:
- Why is the artist important in the history of art?
- Why is the art they made famous?
- How would art be different if that artist hadn't existed?
Fill in the blanks of the template as you are gathering your information. Also review and select artwork that describe the artist you have chosen.

Task 5
In pairs use the "Reflection Questions" handout to answer questions from each category to assess what you've done so far on your Artist Guide.
As we get closer to the final print, we will take a look at the Rubric to decide where there are areas for improvement or progress needed. Get input from your partner to finalize the template before turning in your project.
Task 6
When pamphlets are complete, print a final copy and give to Ms Fitzpatrick. If printing is not available, send a the file to Ms. Fitzpatrick through the link below. We will display all the pamphlets for a gallery walk.

Task 8
Create your accompanying art work to highlight the style of the artist you chose.
Remember that you will be creating an artwork in the style of the artist. You have a choice to create it on the computer, or using traditional art supplies. Remember, in the computer room you may not have access to the variety of art supplies that you may need, so plan accordingly. You should have already researched what kind of materials the artist used so you can recreate a work in that artist's style. You may want to print out one of the artist's famous works, or pick your own theme. Just make sure the artist's style is reflected in your art work.
Task 9
In pairs use the "Reflection Questions" handout to answer questions from each category to assess what you've done on your own art.
When your artwork is complete, show final piece to Ms. Fitzpatrick and then send through the link below or take a picture so it can be added to the electronic gallery for the gallery walk.
