Here is another way to thread photos together, add music and narration, and different kinds of effects to make a memorable video project. Below is a tutorial on how to create digital story using this application.
Preparation: All images, music and other files should be stored in a file on the student server, USB/Thumb drive, or a folder on the desktop. Make sure that you have all the files you need before starting.
Task 1: Begin
- Open photostory
- Begin new story
- Click next
In the future, you can also edit a previously made story or play a story.
Task 2: Import and arrange your pictures
(import images, remove borders, rotate images, simple photo editing)
- Click Import Pictures. Locate folder where your images are located. If you have not found images yet, do so now
- Click on first image. Hold shift key down. Clock on the last image - this will select all images. To select non-sequentially, hold the control key down and select. Click OK once selected. The images will now load into the timeline.
- To reorder your images: Click, drag, and reposition in the timeline
Note: YOu can always add other images by repeating the steps above
- Option: Once the order of images has been determined, you may wish to remove the black boarders of your images. Click REMOVE BLACK BORDERS. Click YES to ALL. Click OK.
Editing Effect: Rotate, Crop, Auto fix, and add effect
Add effect: None, Black and White, Chalk and Charcoal, Color Pencil, Diffuse Glow, Negative, Outline- Black, Outline- Grey, Sepia, Washout, Water Color
- Save OFTEN At this point, save your file. Save it to the folder you created on the server, USB/Thumbdrive, or desktop. Be sure that your images and Photostory files are in the same folder.
- Click next
Task 3: Add a title to your pictures
(add titles and effects to your images)
- Click on the slide you wish to add text. Type your title into the window and use the various tools to change the font, font color, and the positioning of the title on the slide.
- Click next
Note: You may wish to add text to slides to create an additional effect. Also consider adding a black background images at the beginning of the digital story to hold the title. Adding a black background images for the title slide would require producing a black background in a paint or graphics editing application. Then you can save as a an image and insert in the front of your photostory.
Task 4: Recording your voice over(narrating) and customizing motion
(add narration to individual slides, customize motion by adding transitions, pans and zooms, set the amount of time for each image, and preview your movie)
To Record Sound:
Insert your microphone into the appropriate ports in your computer. Configure the microphone and sound levels using the hardware test.
- Select the image you want to record sound on
- Click on the record sound button
- Record your narration. Clock on the stop button
- Test your voice over by selecting the Preview button
- If acceptable, repeat steps. If the voice over needs to be redone, remove the voice over by clicking on the appropriate button and then following the previous steps
Customize Motion:
- Click on the image in the timeline you wish to work with
- Click on the customize motion button directly below the picture
- The program defaults to the motion and duration tab. This allows you to determine pans and zooms
- Click the Specify start and end position of motion . The images in the START position and the END position will have handles that appear. Use the handles to position the images for the desired effect. When this image appears in the movie, it begins as a large image and zooms inward upon completion of the image in the movie
Additional options:
- Set start position to be the same as the end position of the previous picture. This will allow for smooth transitions between images
- Set the end position to be the same as the start position. use this effect to have no change through the time the image is displayed in the digital story
- Number the seconds to display the picture: This overrides the automatic feature and allows for more specific user control of image display
- Preview the effect
- Save the effect
Note: This is a save function for just this image not the whole project
- Use the arrows to migrate to the next image
Transitions:
Notes: Cross dissolve is the default function. Determine transitions based on need, you can over do this option. Choose wisely
- Click the transition tab across the top
- This program displays the previous picture and the current picture with the effect between it
- Use the scroll on the right side of the window to select the transition and preview. use the arrows below the time display to migrate from picture to picture.
- Click Save (this saves the effect on the slide, not the whole project), then close if you are done.
- Repeat where necessary
Task 5: Add background music
- Click either the Select Music button or the Create Music Button. T he Select Button enables the user to select mp3 files created or downloaded from a source outside of Photostory. The Create Music button enables the user to take advantage of the onboard music of Photostory.
- For our purposes, we will use the Create Music button to add music
- Play to preview the music. If you like it, click OK
- The music will now load into the track
- Be sure to reduce the volume of the music track
- Go next
Notes: To add more than one music track, select another image in the timeline and repeat the above process. The second track will appear in green. Photostory will drop the level of the first music track to transition to the second music track
Task 6: Save your story
This step converts your Photostory into a Windows media file, so it can be played on any other computer that has Window Media Player installed.
Notes: Make all changes before this step! once you convert to a media file, you cannot go back and edit. Render each movie as 320x240 so all movies can be posted online.
- Select the location for the completed movie (student server, USB/Thumb drive, desktop)
- Click next. Photostory builds your movie
- Click view your story!
